"Work had to be enjoyable on a daily basis. We all had to come to work on the balls of our feet and go up the stairs two steps at a time. "
I recently read Yvon Chouinard - ‘Let my people go surfing’ of which this quote above was taken. It’s the story of the outdoor company Patagonia with its unorthodox beginning, business practices and unique team spirit — which live on throughout the company today.
I had no idea that beyond creating amazing tech-smart clothing and equipment they were mission led as an organization from the beginning. Today, the environmental cause is well understood, but back in the 1980s and before the ‘green revolution’ Patagonia were (and still are) pioneers in supporting environmental activism. They were some of the first businesses to think about organic materials and sustainability. Internally, their work place and ethics inspired the open plan office we think is normal today in Silicon Valley and much more. They even helped change Federal workplace laws which allowed childcare on site and gave women and men maternity leave in America.
I truly believe that we all have something to contribute and do something that speaks to us, that we believe in.
We wont always be able to run up the stairs two steps at a time every single day — but wouldn’t that be nice?
